Marques (BRA) and Fernandez (GUA) recruited as YOG 2018 pentathlon ambassadors 

Two more high-profile Olympic pentathletes have been recruited to work in ambassadorial roles at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires (ARG).

Only weeks after the Australian Olympic Committee announced that Chloe Esposito (AUS) would play the role of Young Change Maker, the International Olympic Committee unveiled Yane Marques (BRA) and Charles Fernandez (GUA) as Athlete Role Models for the Games.

While Esposito (AUS) will mentor Australian athletes across all sports, Fernandez (GUA) and Marques (BRA) will specifically work with Modern Pentathlon, which takes place on October 12-14 and 16.

All three were participants in the 2016 Olympic Games, where Esposito (AUS) won the women’s gold medal. Marques (BRA) previously won bronze at London 2012.

Fernandez (GUA), the 2017 world junior champion, said of his role: “For me it is an honour and a blessing to be chosen as an Athlete Role Model at the Youth Olympics Games 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“Four years ago I lost the opportunity to participate in the Youth Olympic Games for being three days over the allowed age, but I never imagined that four years later I would be nominated and invited to participate as an athlete role model representing Guatemala.

“Being able to impact athletes is such an amazing opportunity to me. I was once a very young athlete with a dream to make it to the Olympic Games and if it hadn't been for my mentors and the people who helped me I wouldn’t have been able to make that dream come true.”
