UIPM 2019 Global Laser Run City Tour: A beacon of hope in Barina (VEN)
Delivering new sporting opportunities in urban communities takes a high degree of commitment at the best of times.
Imagine, then, the dedication it must have taken to put Venezuela on the Global Laser Run City Tour map at a time when the country is disrupted by serious political and social unrest.
In spite of this adversity, the Venezuela Modern Pentathlon Federation succeeded in putting on a Laser Run showcase for 214 boys and girls in the city of Barina, with another GLRCT to follow in Miranda on June 29.
A spokesperson for the local organising committee said: “It was an event developed with much enthusiasm and sacrifice, but above all with the responsibility of guaranteeing the expansion and popularisation of our sport in the country.
“In this event we counted on the participation of 214 boys and girls, each of them very happy and enjoying each of the disciplines that characterise our sport.
“Our Venezuelan Federation feels very pleased about this beautiful project and hopes to guarantee in the next Laser Run a better organization and development in spite of the various economic limitations.”
The GLRCT was created to provide an entry point to UIPM Sports for people of all ages in urban communities around the world.
Another 100 cities have been selected in 2019 as hosts of the GLRCT or the Biathle/Triathle National Tour. The full calendar can be viewed at the UIPM website, where you can also find more information on UIPM’s various multi-discipline sports.
In September, the UIPM Laser Run World Championships will be incorporated into the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time in Budapest (HUN), where Laser Run is also on the programme for the 1st World Urban Games.
In December, Laser Run and Triathle will both feature for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
