UIPM 2019 Global Laser Run City Tour: Big numbers and big smiles in Abidjan (CIV)
The Global Laser Run City Tour in Abidjan (CIV) provided one of the visual highlights of the 2018 season, a photograph of a mass group of young participants beaming with joy after their first taste of Laser Run.
A year later, the GLRCT was back in the Ivory Coast capital city to give another huge group of youngsters a chance to sample UIPM’s fastest-growing development sport. The success of the first venture in 2018 attracted the attendance of the Minister for Sport, Paulin Claude Danho.
The event at Koumassi municipal high school on May 25, attended by 150 athletes, acted as a season launch for the Ivorian Modern Pentathlon Federation. The 2019 competition season will also feature a Biathle/Triathle National Tour in Ivory Coast.
A spokesperson for the local organising committee said: “A huge crowd of both pupils and students from the high school had little hesitation in attending a beautiful season-opening Laser Run competition that has been long awaited by pentathlon athletes.
“This season opener proved to be a great display of tremendous fighting spirit with everyone left satisfied and looking forward to attending the next competition.”
The GLRCT was created to provide an entry point to UIPM Sports for people of all ages in urban communities around the world.
Another 100 cities have been selected in 2019 as hosts of the GLRCT or the Biathle/Triathle National Tour. The full calendar can be viewed at the UIPM website, where you can also find more information on UIPM’s various multi-discipline sports.
In September, the UIPM Laser Run World Championships will be incorporated into the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time in Budapest (HUN), where Laser Run is also on the programme for the 1st World Urban Games.
In December, Laser Run and Triathle will both feature for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
