UIPM 2019 Global Laser Run City Tour: Northern star shines brightly in Gulu (UGA)
Nine months after it burst into life with a blaze of colour and youthful exuberance, the UIPM Laser Run movement in Uganda has enjoyed another landmark moment.
The country’s second Global Laser Run City Tour took place on April 27 in Gulu, a northern town four hours’ drive from the capital city of Kampala, where the inaugural event took place in July 2018.
Instead of schoolchildren, this time the entry list was composed mainly of students as the City Tour was held at Gulu University.
There was a wide age span among participants, and a trophy was awarded to the best male and the best female competitor.
Simon Peter Komakech, President of the Uganda Modern Pentathlon Federation, said: “Twenty-eight pentathletes participated in Uganda’s second Global Laser Run City Tour in Gulu, with the youngest being six years old.
“We would like to make this a yearly event in the northern part of the country.”
The Global Laser Run City Tour was created in 2017 to provide an entry point to UIPM Sports for people of all ages in urban communities around the world.
Another 100 cities have been selected in 2019 as hosts of the GLRCT or the Biathle/Triathle National Tour. The full calendar can be viewed at the UIPM website, where you can also find more information on UIPM’s various multi-discipline sports.
In September, the UIPM Laser Run World Championships will be incorporated into the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time in Budapest (HUN), where Laser Run is also on the programme for the 1st World Urban Games.
In December, Laser Run and Triathle will both feature for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
