UIPM 2019 Global Laser Run City Tour: Racing returns to Rostov-on-Don (RUS)
The city of Rostov-on-Don blazed a trail for Laser Run in Russia, hosting the country’s first Global Laser Run City Tour in 2017.
For the third year in a row, the city hosted UIPM’s most progressive and popular development circuit on May 1, where more than 250 participants came from Rostov-on-Don, Novocherkassk, Shakhty, Taganrog, Belaya Kalitva and other cities of the Rostov region, as well as Krasnodar and Chelyabinsk.
The city has become an established venue for UIPM Sports and the 2019 GLRCT was attended by numerous local government VIPs including the Governor of the Rostov region, the Deputy Governor for Physical Culture and Sport and the Minister for Physical Culture and Sport.
Professional athletes, schoolchildren and students of the Cossack cadet corps – who also gave a demonstration performance – mingled during the competition and the winners competed for the prize of being invited to enter the 2019 Kremlin Cup competition in Moscow (RUS) in September.
A spokesperson for the local organising committee said: “This was a very successful instalment of the UIPM Global Laser Run City Tour and it was wonderful to see so many athletes of different ages and backgrounds taking part.
“In addition, during the competition, parents of young athletes decided to take part and a separate race was organized among the volunteers who helped with the event.
“Prizes were not only available to the winners of the competition. During the warm-up a lottery was held among all participants with sports bags, backpacks, swimming equipment and T-shirts on offer – and the main prize was a tablet.
“We are already looking forward to welcoming the GLRCT back to Rostov-on-Don in the near future.”
The Global Laser Run City Tour was created in 2017 to provide an entry point to UIPM Sports for people of all ages in urban communities around the world.
Another 100 cities have been selected in 2019 as hosts of the GLRCT or the Biathle/Triathle National Tour. The full calendar can be viewed at the UIPM website, where you can also find more information on UIPM’s various multi-discipline sports.
In September, the UIPM Laser Run World Championships will be incorporated into the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time in Budapest (HUN), where Laser Run is also on the programme for the 1st World Urban Games.
In December, Laser Run and Triathle will both feature for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
