UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships: Micheli (ITA) takes share of lead

• Silver medallist from 2019 puts herself in contention for world title
• Simon (HUN) wins Semi-final alongside Clouvel (FRA)
• Oliver (MEX), Gulyas (HUN) and Varley (GBR) among chasing pack

Elena Micheli of Italy will be one of the leading contenders on Super Saturday after performing strongly in the Semi-finals at the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships.

The 2019 silver medallist won 22 of her 35 bouts in the Fencing Ranking Round, enabling her to top the overall standings alongside fellow Women’s Final qualifiers Mayan Oliver of Mexico and Sarolta Simon of Hungary.

Two other likely challengers are lurking close behind, as Elodie Clouvel of France and Michelle Gulyas (HUN) each scored 20V/15D.

Simon (HUN) and world No.1 Clouvel (FRA) were the fastest finishers in Semi-final A, with Great Britain duo Olivia Green and Jessica Varley close behind.

Micheli (ITA) was first across the line in Semi-final B, followed closely by Gulyas (HUN) and Sunwoo Kim of Korea.

Great Britain (Green, Varley and Charlie Follett) and Korea (Kim, Haeun Jang and Seungmin Seong) each had three qualifiers. Salma Abdelmaksoud and Malak Ismail of Egypt ensured there would be a strong home representation in the Final.

The UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships reach a climax tomorrow (July 30) with the Men’s and Women’s Finals followed by the Mixed Relay on July 31.
