UIPM 2022 Youth World Championships: Egypt claim U19 Women’s Relay title
Egypt stood out on the second day of the UIPM 2022 Youth World Championships with success in the Under 19 Women’s Relay.
Day 2 of the combined age-group competition in Lignano Sabbiadoro (ITA) also featured qualification for the Under 17 Men’s Semi-final, with 36 athletes moving forward to the second phase.
Under 19 Day 2
Malak Ismail (EGY) retained the Women’s Relay title she won on home soil in Alexandria (EGY) last year after an excellent win alongside Zeina Amer (EGY).
Silver went to Verity Clements and Gabrielle Holland of Great Britain while Korea achieved their second bronze in successive days thanks to Yena Kim and Sumin Shin.
Again, there was a multi-continental appearance to the top of the leaderboard as Mexico (5th) joined Hungary (4th) and France (6th) in the top six.
Egypt (Amer/Ismail) narrowly topped the standings in Fencing with 19V/7D and four points in the Bonus Round. Host nation representatives Sara Forti and Teresa Gioia of Italy managed 18 victories, one more than Great Britain (Clements/Holland).
Italy (Forti/Gioia) performed best in Swimming, timing 2:09.48 to keep the pressure on 2nd-fastest Egypt (Amer/Ismail), with Maja Marcinkowska and Pola Wolska of Poland timing 2:11.14.
Egypt (Amer/Ismail) produced a solid Laser Run to hold on to pole position as the home challenge fell away, allowing Great Britain (Clements/Holland) to push through strongly for silver. By far the quickest Laser Run was delivered by Korea (Kim/Shin), who timed 13:35.32 to put a 20sec margin between themselves and 4th-placed Hungary (Lili Gyarmati & Laura Walthier).
Under 17 Day 2
A five-strong group saw three athletes cross the line together for 855 points at the end of the first Men’s Individual U17 qualification heat – Krystian Trepczyk (POL), Almos Kiss-Szollosi (HUN) and Marwan Allam (EGY).
The second heat was won far more convincingly by Romulo Vasconcelos of Brazil, 9sec ahead of Adam Peter (HUN), Oleksandr Melynk of Ukraine, Ahmet Onder of Turkey and Bartosz Szmytke (POL).
