- Global debut for new format of Obstacle / Swimming / Laser Run
- New President Stull savours ‘great honour’ of attending new competition
GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA: December 4, 2024 – From Ecuador to Egypt, Germany to South Africa, teenage athletes have come from around the world to Central America for the inaugural UIPM Tetrathlon U15 World Championships.
Although U15 athletes compete in other UIPM Sports at global level, this is the first time the age group has had its own dedicated competition, launching a new era for Tetrathlon with the new sequence of Obstacle, Swimming and Laser Run.
The big three nations of North America – Canada, Mexico and United States – are all represented as excitement grows around the integration of Obstacle in the UIPM Sports movement ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Athletes will compete in Women’s and Men’s Relays on the opening day (4 December), with the Individual Finals taking place on 7 December before the Mixed Relay on 8 December.
The last UIPM competition of 2024 comes three weeks after the 73rd UIPM Congress, where the current President of the North America, Central America & Caribbean (NORCECA) Confederation, Rob Stull OLY, was elected as UIPM President.
Welcome notes
UIPM President Rob Stull OLY said: “To be able to attend the first ever UIPM U15 World Championships as my first major event since being elected President is a great honour. The sports community in Guatemala have worked hard to prepare to host this major championship in their country.
“With the Olympics coming back to the Americas in 2028, I am so very pleased to see our sport so alive and well in the region with strong organisers and great programmes. Our future is dependent on the youth of the world and the U15 World Championships provides opportunities that these young athletes have not had until now. I am sure it will be an exciting week.”
Guatemalan Modern Pentathlon Association President Magdalena Quintanilla said: “The credit goes to the volunteers and staff of Guatemala Pentathlon who have worked so hard to bring a major Championship to life in our beautiful country. The people of Guatemala now have a chance to witness our sport, to see our future in the hands of these young, dedicated athletes, who will perform this week.”
