UIPM unveils groundbreaking new course focusing on essentials and standardisation of future Obstacle-related events

UIPM News
  • Online educational package covers OCR, Ninja and UIPM Obstacle
  • E-learning experience for both Obstacle and Pentathlon communities
  • Explainers, tutorials and games included in 5-hour bundle

The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) is delighted to unveil a groundbreaking educational course which consolidates the essentials of the Obstacle world in one place for the first time.

Sounds pretty useful, right?

Available now on the UIPM Educational Platform, Navigating OCR, Ninja and UIPM Obstacle Like a Pro: Sport and Rules Overview pulls all the rules and technical knowledge of the primary Obstacle disciplines into a single package.

It will be an instantly indispensable resource for those already embedded in the Obstacle community — from athletes and coaches to judges and fans too. But it will also serve as a great starting point for the Modern Pentathlon community, who are eager to embrace the exciting new discipline and looking for a comprehensive overview to get their Obstacle journey rolling.

Incorporating dynamic video explainers which help unlock the finer details of Obstacle, with picture tutorials and fun mini games, the e-learning course will take approximately 5-6 hours to finish. The certificate of completion obtained at the end will be a requirement for candidates seeking international certification as Obstacle Judges for future events.

UIPM’s determination and excitement at integrating Obstacle into the Pentathlon family has seen the launch of resources such as Obstacle catalogues and modules last year as well as the hugely productive first meetings of an ad-hoc Working Group charged with formalising the integration of the Obstacle community.

Navigating OCR, Ninja, and UIPM Obstacle Like a Pro: Sport and Rules Overview is the next step in this process. The course will be structured into five modules, as follows:

  • Intro and history of Obstacle industry
  • OCR Cross Country
  • OCR Track
  • Ninja
  • UIPM Obstacle

Speaking about the launch of the course, UIPM Secretary General Shiny Fang said: “This is another huge step forward for our to grow in a sustainable and methodical way while we just started embracing new discipline/sport. I know that the course will be a great resource for everyone across our communities as we grow closer.

“Bringing all of these key pieces of information and education into one central location is a big breakthrough and we’re delighted to offer it. We encourage everyone interested to take a look.

“The presentation of the course, especially the accompanying explainer videos, is at a really high level and we are sure will be really well received. We look forward to everyone getting involved!”

UIPM’s new Obstacle discipline, introduced in all under-age World Championships since 2023, will become a full part of Modern Pentathlon immediately after the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and is a key part of the format accepted for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
