Like any doctors, the people in charge of overseeing the medical landscape in UIPM Sports provide both proactive and reactive expertise, using their professional knowledge and sports experience to ensure all athletes compete in the safest and fairest possible environment.
The UIPM Medical Committee is responsible for all medical questions within the UIPM Sports movement and for supervising compliance of UIPM Rules and Policy with WADA requirements.
The Committee also monitors and reports on any cases of suspected doping, takes part in the elaboration of Rules which may have medical consequences, and reports to the Executive Board on the activities carried out by UIPM Medical Delegates.
Having previously been chaired by Dr Natalja Ofitserova (Belarus), the Medical Committee is now under the supervision of Dr Douglass Stull (United States), who chaired a meeting of six members in Nice (FRA) ahead of the start of the 2025 season.
Dr Stull said: “The UIPM Medical Committee met for our first meeting of our four-year term in Nice on February 1-2. As Chair of the Committee, I am excited to report our union has a uniquely qualified diverse team of physicians.
“We represent internal medicine (Marco Michelucci), general practice (Steph Cook), cardiology (Moussa Tadros), and orthopaedic surgery with an emphasis in sports medicine (Bassel Jamil, Dapeng Bao and Doug Stull). We hail from Brazil, Egypt, China, Syria, Great Britain and the United States.
“Three of us competed as pentathletes, one of whom is the first women's Olympic champion in our sport. We are assisted by a passionate, committed member of the UIPM staff, Radka Zaplatelova.”
