Second Laser-Run with obstacles demonstration

Modern Pentathlon

Following the success of the first event at World Cup I in Los Angeles (USA), UIPM staged a second demonstration of Laser-Run with obstacles after the Women’s Individual Final at the Cairo International Stadium.

The obstacles included hurdles, pyramids, slalom and half pipes and the demonstration was watched by a large crowd of appreciative and curious spectators at the front of the tribune.

Around 20 nations took part and Ilke Ozyuksel (TUR) and Richard Bereczki (HUN) won the demonstration, designed to add further weight to the UIPM’s application for the Mixed Relay to be included in the Olympic Games programme at Tokyo 2020.

The Mixed Relay proposal includes a Laser-Run finale with obstacles, where pairs can decide their own order of racing in advance and then touch hands at the end of each lap to mark transition.

Alexandre Daellenbach (SUI) said "It was an amazing race, a lot of excitement.  I love the hurdle things where we had to jump!  It was really fast really exciting, I don't think it really gets better than that and the idea of the pyramids really fantastic.  I tried to go like a little bit hurdle style, just jump up and you know really go over the tops so... fantastic format and I think UIPM should really go for this it's great fun and thank you Cairo for organising this it was amazing!”
