UIPM 2019 Global Laser Run City Tour: New athletes mobilised in Lome (TOG)
Togo held its second Global Laser Run City Tour in Lome on December 21, 2019, building on the success of the opening event three months earlier.
Word had spread about Laser Run across the capital city, creating a buzz that encouraged more club leaders to mobilise participants to compete at the venue in the eastern suburb of Baguida.
With categories from Under 11 to senior, there were opportunities for a wide range of participants and office-bearers from the Togolese Federation of Modern Pentathlon (FTPM) were present, including President Komlan Abalo.
A spokesperson for the local organising committee said: “We were very pleased to be able to mobilise Federation executives, club leaders and especially pentathletes from the different clubs in the capital.
“There was a real competitive atmosphere and a real festive atmosphere during the late refreshments. This tells us that future competitions promise an even better 2020 for our Federation, for our clubs and for many more pentathletes.”
The Global Laser Run City Tour was created in 2017 to provide an entry point to UIPM Sports for people of all ages in urban communities around the world.
Almost 100 cities were selected in 2019 as hosts of the GLRCT or the Biathle-Triathle National Tour. The full calendar for 2020 can be viewed at the UIPM website, where you can also find more information on UIPM’s various multi-discipline sports.
In September 2019, the UIPM Laser Run World Championships was incorporated into the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time in Budapest (HUN), where Laser Run also featured as a showcase sport at the 1st World Urban Games.
In December 2019, Laser Run and Triathle both featured for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
