UIPM 2019 Global Laser Run City Tour: At the double in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro (CIV)
Not once but twice in the week before Christmas 2019, the people of the Ivory Coast sampled the joys of the Global Laser Run City Tour.
About 100 young athletes from the age of 11 took part in Yamoussoukro on December 21, with another 150 participants racing in the capital city of Abidjan two days later.
The youth athletes used the opportunity to hone their Laser Run skills as part of their ongoing Modern Pentathlon education. They were presented with awards and diplomas at the end of the day.
Francois Xavier Akonde, President of the Federation de Pentathlon Moderne de Cote d’Ivoire, said: “We can say with pleasure today that Modern Pentathlon is now well known in the two big cities of our country, Abidjan and Yamoussoukro.
“We are satisfied to have been able to organize these two Global Laser Run City Tour competitions at the end of 2019. On both days we saw a beautiful gathering of sports youth with young people mastering the practice of Modern Pentathlon disciplines much better.”
The Global Laser Run City Tour was created in 2017 to provide an entry point to UIPM Sports for people of all ages in urban communities around the world.
Another 100 cities were selected in 2019 as hosts of the GLRCT or the Biathle-Triathle National Tour. The full calendar for 2020 can be viewed at the UIPM website, where you can also find more information on UIPM’s various multi-discipline sports.
In September 2019, the UIPM Laser Run World Championships was incorporated into the Pentathlon World Championships for the first time in Budapest (HUN), where Laser Run also featured as a showcase sport at the 1st World Urban Games.
In December, Laser Run and Triathle both featured for the first time in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
