UIPM 2023 Pentathlon World Championships: Frezza (ITA) leads after Women’s Semi-finals

Alessandra Frezza of Italy goes into the Women’s Final in pole position after impressing in the Semi-Finals at the UIPM 2023 Pentathlon World Championships.

Frezza (ITA) will be joined by two higher-ranked team-mates, reigning world champion Elena Micheli (ITA) and European Games gold medallist Alice Sotero (ITA), but she will start with a 10-point overall lead after starring in the Fencing Ranking Round.

Frezza (ITA) scored 24 victories from her 35 bouts, two more than fellow Final qualifiers Rebecca Langrehr of Germany and three more than Micheli (ITA), Kerenza Bryson of Great Britain and Mariana Arceo of Mexico.

Semi-final A was won by four athletes who finished in unison – Salma Abdelmaksoud of Egypt, Michelle Gulyas of Hungary, Sotero (ITA) and Jessica Varley (GBR), with two-time Olympic medallist Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania only 3sec behind.

Micheli (ITA) was the top performer in Semi-final B with a daily high score of 1,130 points, finishing only 1sec ahead of Arceo (MEX) with Sunwoo Kim of Korea close behind.

There was an exceptional Laser Run performance by Blanka Bauer (HUN), who set a new world record of 10min 38.08sec. 

Up to three places in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be on the line in the Women’s Final on Super Sunday (August 27).

• Sunday, August 27 | Women’s Final (11.15am) | Men’s Final (4.15pm)
• Monday, August 28 | Mixed Relay (2.15pm)
