UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Cup Final: Athlete line-up revealed

  • Olympic champions Choong and French (GBR) among big names in field

  • Athletes have two more chances to add Paris 2024 Olympic ranking points

The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) is delighted to announce the 72 athletes who will compete in the UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Cup Final (May 22-26).

The line-up for the showpiece competition, held in Ankara (TUR) for the second successive year, includes world No.1 Elena Micheli of Italy, the 2023 women’s champion and current two-time world champion, along with team-mate Alice Sotero, the European champion.

Two-time men’s world champion Joseph Choong of Great Britain will also take part, along with team-mate and fellow Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Kate French.

Egypt, the outstanding team that won an exceptional 12 medals in the four Pentathlon World Cups of the regular season, including two in every Men’s Final, has the luxury of resting the 2023 champion, Mohanad Shaban, with brothers Ahmed and Mohamed Elgendy competing alongside Moutaz Mohamed.

All individual gold medallists from the regular season will be in Ankara (TUR) – Michelle Gulyas and Blanka Guzi of Hungary, Kerenza Bryson (GBR) and Mariya Gnedtchik (AIN) on the women’s side, and men’s champions Changwan Seo of Korea and Pierre Dejardin of France.

Tokyo 2020 medallists Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania and Woongtae Jun (KOR) are among the other big names to look out for.

The competition represents the penultimate chance for athletes to earn points towards the Olympic World Rankings that will determine the majority of the remaining 28 places at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

All 36 female and male qualifiers are listed below, while the Mixed Relay promises to be captivating with Mexico likely to be among the favourites, having won two golds and bronze in Pentathlon World Cups this season. 

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said: “The UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Cup Final promises to be a momentous occasion as it will be like a dress rehearsal for the Olympic Games, with 36 female and 36 male athletes competing in Semi-finals, and half of them qualifying for the Final.

“I know our athletes will be at their very best as they continue to build confidence for Paris 2024, and in many cases chase a qualification place. I am also certain that Ankara will put on a wonderful show for this prestigious event, as we approach the climax of the 2024 Modern Pentathlon season and the end of an exciting Olympic cycle.”
