UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Cup Final: Fencing update

Modern Pentathlon

Unju Kim of Korea and Valentin Prades of France took the initiative on the first day of the UIPM 2024 Pentathlon World Cup Final in Ankara (TUR).

With a format mirroring the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Modern Pentathlon competition, the Fencing Ranking Round took place on day one and Unju (KOR) dominated the morning session with a superb performance comprising 27 victories and only eight defeats.

It was destined to be a good day for France, in fact, with Marie Oteiza (FRA) standing out with 25 victories and Elodie Clouvel (FRA) joining Elzbieta Adomaityte of Lithuania on 22.

Those four athletes will go into tomorrow’s Women’s Semi-finals at the top of the leaderboard, while the Men’s Semi-finals on Friday will start with a familiar name in pole position.

Prades (FRA) is already a three-time winner of this competition, having earned the title in 2013, 2017 and 2021. He edged into the top spot with 23V/11D today, narrowly ahead of Hungary duo Csaba Bohm (22V/12D) and Bence Demeter (21V/13D), with Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Pavlo Tymoshchenko of Ukraine also managing 21 touches.
