Rio 2016 Modern Pentathlon update: Men's Swimming

Modern Pentathlon
Another Olympic record was broken at Rio 2016 when James Cooke (GBR) won the Men's Swimming event at the Deodoro Aquatics Center.

Cooke (GBR) defeated Amro Elgeziry (EGY) in the final heat and in the process robbed him of his Olympic record. Cooke's new mark is 1min 55.60secs and Elgeziry was very close behind in 1:55.80, just slower than his 2008 record of 1:55.70. Joseph Choong (GBR) was third-fastest in 1:58.50.

This was the fifth Olympic record in the Rio 2016 competition so far and the second in the pool, after Gulnaz Gubaydullina (RUS) broke the women's Olympic swimming record yesterday.

All of the heats proceeded according to form, but there were some convincing victories from 2015 world champion Pavlo Tymoshchenko (UKR), Valentin Prades (FRA), Charles Fernandez (GUA), Jun Woongtae (KOR) and 2012 Olympic silver medallist Cao Zhongrong (CHN).

Next for the men is the Fencing Bonus Round (2pm local time), the Riding (3.30pm) and finally the Combined Event (6pm) where the medals will be decided.
