Guzauskaite and Fitton win women's qualifications at Junior Europeans
The Belorussian capital Minsk is currently hosting the Junior European Championships with the qualification stages underway. Yesterday saw the women battle it out in two groups to decide who would make the cut for the final. Lithuania's Karolina Guzauskaite and Great Britain's Alice Fitton topped the charts in their respective groups.
In Group A, Paula Markowska of Poland got off to a brilliant start after she claimed 14 wins on the pistes to go top of the leaderboard after the fence. Anastasia Petrova of Russia won the swim in a time of 2:16 but it was Pulcherie Delhalle of France who began the combined in pole position with Guzauskaite in 4th.
Guzauskaite, who impressed at Senior level earlier this season by coming 7th at World Cup #4, showed her credentials with some razor-sharp shooting as the difference was made at the range. She looked composed to win the group by 7 seconds. Delhalle finished second with Anna Maliszewska of Poland in third.
Group B was all about Alice Fitton with the young Brit coming third in the fence then following that up with the fastest time in the 200m freestyle to begin the run/shoot in pole. Comfortable throughout, she crossed the finish line with an 8sec cushion over her nearest rival. Aurelija Tamasauskaite of Lithuania came second and Ukraine's Anastasiya Spas third
