Modern Pentathlon proposed by IOC Executive Board for inclusion in Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028
MONACO: October 13, 2023 – The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) today received confirmation from the IOC Executive Board that it has recommended Modern Pentathlon for inclusion on the sport programme of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.
The IOC EB’s recommendation will be voted on by the IOC Session in Mumbai on October 15-17.
UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said: “Today’s decision by the IOC Executive Board to recommend Modern Pentathlon as part of the sport programme for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 validates an extraordinary team effort by many people inside and outside of the UIPM society over the past 22 months.
“UIPM was challenged by the IOC President to carry out a ‘critical reform’ of Modern Pentathlon, finding a replacement for Riding as one of the sport’s five disciplines, and that is exactly what we have done – paying close attention to reducing the cost and complexity of the sport and adding appeal for youth and the general public.
“The integration of Obstacle in Modern Pentathlon has already proved to be highly successful and we now have a product that has the potential to add tremendous value to the Olympic Games for all future organisers, while respecting the vision of Baron Pierre de Coubertin to create a sport that examines the complete athlete.
“We are grateful to the IOC for their continued support during this process. Although we take nothing for granted, we now await the outcome of the 141st IOC Session with great interest and faith. A lot of work has been done and a lot of work lies ahead, as we continue the evolutionary process that has maintained the constant presence of Modern Pentathlon on the Olympic programme since Stockholm 1912.”
