Rio 2016 Modern Pentathlon update: Men's Fencing

Alexander Lesun (RUS) has won the Men's Fencing event in Modern Pentathlon at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and is the overall leader after two events. 

Lesun (RUS) lost the final bout of the Fencing Bonus Round to Patrick Dogue (GER) but he had already broken the Olympic record in Thursday's Ranking Round. With a Fencing score of 268 he leads the competition with 592 points ahead of two athletes tied for second on 569: Omar Elgeziry (EGY) and Joseph Choong (GBR).

 

Behind them, Amro Elgeziry (EGY) is 4th on 561 and Dogue (GER) is 5th on 558. So there are a pack of athletes in hot pursuit of Lesun (RUS) as attention moves to the Riding at Deodoro Stadium.

 

In the Fencing Bonus Round, which has enjoyed a successful Olympic debut on the stadium's stunning show piste over the past two days, no fencer was able to get a foothold on the ladder and the biggest winners were Justinas Kinderis (LTU) and Bence Demeter (HUN) with three wins apiece. But Dogue (GER) secured two points at the end to be the last man standing with a solid Fencing score of 240.

James Cooke (GBR) won the Swimming event and set a new Olympic record this morning. The men's medals will be decided later today after the remaining events: Riding (3.30pm local time) and the Combined Event (6pm).
