UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Cup Cairo: France quartet dominate Men’s Qualification

UIPM 2025 Pentathlon World Cup Cairo continued to provide drama on day two as athletes from France dominated the Men’s Qualification round.

Group A was won by Leo Bories (FRA) ahead of team-mate Mathis Rochat (FRA) with an impressive 1,543 and 1,540 points respectively. Ugo Fleurot (FRA) raised the bar even higher in Group B with 1,546 points, six more than two-time world champion Valentin Belaud (FRA).

Those results confirmed that the French team is coping well with the new Modern Pentathlon format, including Obstacle for the first time. But it was Egypt athletes who continued to set the standard on the Obstacle course, with four of the quickest times including a blistering 21.93sec from Mohamed El Ashqar, on his way to finishing 3rd in Group A. Matej Lukes of Czechia claimed 3rd place in Group B.

Later in the day, the first-ever Fencing Seeding Round took place as the women competitors jostled for position in the new-look direct elimination format that will be in place for the Semi-finals and Finals.

Teen phenomenon Farida Khalil (EGY) continued to impress as she scored a remarkable 24 victories and suffered only six defeats on the piste, meaning she will be seeded first in Semi-final A. The same honour in Semi-final B will fall to Paris 2024 Olympic champion Michelle Gulyas of Hungary, after she scored 22V/10D.

Pentathlon World Cup Cairo continues tomorrow (February 27) with the Women's Semi-finals and Men’s Fencing Seeding Round, followed by the Men’s Semi-finals on February 28 and the Finals on Super Saturday, March 1.
